The Inscriptions on the Headstones and Memorials of the Church of Saint James the Less Kingston, South Devon
Transcribed by W.Scarratt, Robins Close, Kingston, 2007
Introductory Notes
In 1979 Douglas Fryer conducted a partial survey of the churchyard, his plan has been reproduced in three sections and his numbering has been followed. For information about Douglas Fryer, and Mary Petter, founder members of the Kingston Local History Society see end of document
In order to facilitate the location of graves the churchyard has been divided up into several areas:
1. South West wall of churchyard (SW wall).
2. West of the War Memorial (W of WM).
3. South wall of churchyard (S Wall).
4. Southern area of churchyard (S). The memorials are grouped in alphabetical rows, and each memorial is numbered in its row, for example S Row C 5. This is explained in the third section of the plan. This Southern area is by far the largest.
5. North West of War Memorial (NW, WM).
6. The foot of the east wall of the Church (EW) and the foot of the north wall (NW)
7. South door of Church (SD) and South window.
8. War Memorial.
9. The interior of the Church.
The Censuses. The original documents are in the Public Record Office and have been accessed through www.ancestry.co.uk. Where the search engine has failed to correlate with a name, or if a name is missing from a particular year, I have not attempted to look for it by other means.
Ages in the censuses may not correlate exactly with those on the headstones.
